How do I use an automatic scanner-yourself, how will I know what part needs repair, and work on my Civic 97?

I want to buy this because my check engine light is on do-it-yourself scanner is recommended?

Taking your car to the guy who sells pieces and does not fix the cars is a bad idea. You should take your car to a professional mechanic this time after taking a course in auto mechanics, control laws emissions and computerized engine controls have made it extremely complicated. I'm not saying you're not smart enough to do this but a course in computer controls the car would be helpful. For example, say you took your car to the local supply store and had free code reader connected to know your car has P0171 code oxygen sensor detects a shortage. If you want an oxygen sensor that will sell you one. But remember it's not what the trouble code says it does, it just says that a lean condition has been detected by the sensor. If someone replaced the oxygen sensor and the car had a fuel pump weak or a dirty fuel filter cause is not enough fuel or maybe a vacuum leak, causing a lot of the engine air intake or any number of other things which could make the engine run lean, the light coming back on the same ground which means that the oxygen sensor is not working and reported the condition lean, but most people would think that the new sensor was bad or someone who simply does not know what they're doing, or worse still think you have been cheated. No no such thing as a machine or a trouble code, which tells one party is bad, or to replace a part. These are just tools that help automotive technician experienced a determination as to want is the right direction to proceed. The repair is more expensive than repair does not fix the car. In short, it is your car, good luck
