Welcome back for another article specifically oriented toward the basement remodeling DIY! In today's article I cover the building materials I use in my projects finished basement.
During the last 17 years I have tried and used many different types of building materials putting my basement remodeling projects together. Some products have been great and others …. well …. just sucks! I quickly run through my list of materials to use for my work so that you know what materials they will have to begin sorting yourself.
We do this in the progression of a job "natural" from start to finish the project. Let's start!
1.) Uprights of the wall is built from regular "2×4" 's or order 8-9-10 "stallions based on their basement ceiling height! I use an air gun loaded with nails 3-1/4" nails making all my projects framing! If hand nailing walls use 16-gauge nails penny nails to fasten the top and bottom plates.
Upper and lower plates 2.) Wall: bottom plates (the that are in the concrete floor) will be "treated wood. Treated wood does not rot when exposed to regular concrete as "pine" no. I ask 2 "x4" x16'-0 "treated timber for this type of fund boards. The upper plate (which I nail in the bottom of the beam of the 1st floor of the existing house) I just order regular 2'X4 "x16'-0" wood the same as the wall studs.
3.) I use the internal wiring to regulate all outlets and light fixtures. I am buying 12.2 or 14.2 standard gauge 250 'rolls of this type of wiring. Use the "blue" nails "built" electrical boxes for all outlets and switch boxes that will be the wiring. More information about why 12.2 vs. 14.2 wiring and wire form physically basement of his new project in another training video
4.) I use regular craft 3-1/2 face "fiberglass insulation to insulate my new wall cavities. Owens Corning brand. I buy the 12 pieces pre-cut packages instead of continuous rolls because is easier to work with! Buying the correct electric staple gun w / 1 / 4 "staples for fixing the insulation to the wall studs secure in place.
5.) I use "new construction" 6 "recessed lighting" cans "to nearly all my new ceiling light fixtures in the basement. Just spread the supports and nail them between existing floor joists, and then wired to code. Discuss in detail the complete wiring in another video series.
6.) I still like the lines of copper pipes installed in my work. I use 1 / 2 "and 3 / 4" copper lines to supply water to all of my bathroom plumbing fixtures and wet bar.
7.) For the bars that can not drain easily use a pump to pump water tray sink "Up-n-out lines residues. For bathroom that can not drain normally I use a "sewage ejector" pump to empty bathroom water waist-N-Out to the regular lines residues of origin. Different pumps for different plumbing needs are often used when dealing quitting with the needs of plumbing "below grade"!
8.) I use standard 1 / 2 "drywall on all walls, ceilings, panels and finishes in all areas of new work, except in bathing areas where there is higher humidity. I use 1 / 2 "MR (moisture resistant) on board my bathroom to combat the humidity levels. I screw and glue all my drywall with 1-1/4 "drywall screws and construction adhesive dry this to make a strong bond to all surfaces of wood, avoids the "nail-pops"!
9.) I use standard pine wood finish (stain degree (of course) and grade paint (finger-jointed FJ)) for all of the base seat, windows and doors, chair rail, crown molding.
10.) I use 3 / 4 "birch plywood layers of all the built-in shelves, racks of music, entertainment wall built-ins, etc. .. You can paint or stain this material. It is durable and beautiful to work.
11.) For the flooring material use a commercial 6-pound carpet padding and Berber. Also the use of ceramic tiles in all of my bathroom, bar and entrance areas. Occasionally use a wood flooring product called Pergo wood floor to simulate requested by the client
12.) I use the wooden stairs and railing products for end to deduct all of my stairway areas
13.) Always finish my entrances to the basement area of the first floor with a complete panel of Light 15 tempered glass door to add style and additional daylight to the basement stairs.
That practically covers 95% of all the different types of materials I have been using for the past 17 years in a full-time basement remodeling specialist!
